Psy Talks ‘Gangnam Style’ and Newfound Fame

Mere months ago, South Korean pop star Psy, short for Psycho—“because I’m crazy about music, stage performance and show,” he says—was a nobody in the U.S. Now, thanks to his absurdist “Gangnam Style” music video, which mocks materialism in Seoul, Psy (real name Park Jae-sang) is topping iTunes charts, breaking YouTube records and signing with Scooter Braun, a.k.a. the guy who made Justin Bieber famous.

TIME: You’re the first Korean solo artist to have a top-selling U.S. single. How does that feel?

PSY: I don’t want to represent my country like a sports player. I’m just an artist. But everything I’m doing from now on is a first for Korean culture. So I’ve got to be good. But if I meet Britney Spears or Katy Perry or whoever, I don’t get panicked, because I’m still a nobody here. I’m just enjoying the situation.

What’s “Gangnam Style” about?

Honestly, it’s to the ladies, to the classy ladies, you know. I want them going crazy, and especially just for me. We all want that.

I’m sure there are many American girls coming up to you because they like the song.

Honestly, they don’t recognize me without sunglasses. I’ve got to wear sunglasses everywhere, all the time, even if its indoors or at night time, to be recognized. That’s part of my job. I cannot take off my sunglasses. For me, staying in the United States was so dark because I can’t take them off. [laughs]

What inspired you to write “Gangnam Style”?

These days people seem so stressed so I just want to make fun by music. But I didn’t expect anything overseas honestly. As an an artist and an entertainer and a writer, I think that was my job. Anti-stress.

Are you going to translate the song?

No. When I signed with Scooter Braun and I decided to go overseas to promote my song, the only concern was how should I communicate with the public and the audience with my language. Scooter and I talked a lot about that: should we translate or not? Finally we didn’t, and I think that was a really good decision. Music is already a huge language and for this song even if you don’t have any idea what I’m talking about, you can still figure out that there’s fun and there’s energy. But if I release a next one it’s going to be in English.

Are you sick of doing the video’s famous horse-riding dance yet?

Sometimes, of course. I’m a human being! It’s tiring to be asked the same questions all day long: “What is Gangnam style?” and “Teach me how to dance.”

Of all the celebrities you’ve taught, who dances best?

Ellen DeGeneres is great.

What about Britney Spears?

She’s got to try another time, because she didn’t expect my appearance. Her skirt was so tight and her heels were so high that she could not do what she usually does.

Why do you think the video went viral?

I think this is all about luck. They say some philosopher said, ‘when effort meets chance, then there is luck.’ That’s what I heard form my fan in Korea. Chance was YouTube and effort my last 12 years because I’ve done these kinds of dance moves and video and songs for 12 years. So I really agree with the philosopher.

Right now, my music video is more famous than I am. If I say, “Hey, I’m Psy.” “Psy?” “The guy from the video on YouTube?” “Oh.” I hate that. I’ve got to be more popular than the video. So I need to keep promoting myself.

Any dream collaborations?

LMFAO, because they have fun with music. And I’ve done the same thing for 12 years in Korea. It would be really funny to have us dancing together.

Shine On, You Crazy Diamond Planet

There’s a gigantic diamond in outer space, according to new research from a team led by Yale University scientists. About as twice as big as Earth and with eight times more mass, the rocky planet is a “Super Earth” and orbits a star 40 light years away in the constellation Cancer.

First detected in 2004,  the planet—dubbed “55 Cancri e”—moves fast and gets hot. It takes just 18 Earth-hours to orbit its star. It’s temperature is estimated to be around 3900 degrees Fahrenheit (2149 degrees Celsius). The planet has a very close relationship with its star—it orbits about 25 times closer to it than Mercury does to our sun). In May 2012, NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope detected light emanating from the planet, which led some to believe 55 Canri e was a water world, but the latest findings indicate otherwise.

Lead researcher Nikku Madhusudhan, a Yale postdoctoral fellow in physics and astronomy, described the surface of the giant “gem” as “likely covered in graphite and diamond rather than water and granite. This is our first glimpse of a rocky world with a fundamentally different chemistry from Earth.” The team’s findings, which have been accepted for publication in the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters,  represents the first time that astronomers have identified a likely diamond planet around a sun-like star and specified its chemical make-up.

Astronomers have been interested in the possibility of diamond planets for years. In 2005, scientists theorized that carbon-rich planets might exist (Related: “Diamond Planets” Hint at Dazzling Promise of Other Worlds). Then in 2010, a team led by Madhusudhan announced the discovery of the first carbon-rich world, a distant gas giant named Wasp 12-b. This tantalizing find led scientists to believe that carbon-rich rocky planets might be out there too.

Last year, Madhusudhan’s team was first able to record 55 Cancri e transitioning its host star. This observation allowed to measure the planet’s radius for the first time. This important data when combined with an estimate of the planet’s mass allowed the team to infer its distinctive chemical composition. Instead of a resembling Earth’s chemical make-up, this rocky planet was something completely different—a planet composed primarily of carbon (as graphite and diamond), iron, silicon carbide, and possibly, some silicates. They speculate that about one third of the planet’s mass is pure diamond.

The identification of a carbon-rich super-Earth means that distant rocky planets can no longer be assumed to have chemical constituents, interiors, atmospheres, or biologies similar to those of Earth, Madhusudhan said. It also has implications for a planet’s thermal evolution and plate tectonics.

“Stars are simple—given a star’s mass and age, you know its basic structure and history,” saidDavid Spergel, professor of astronomy and chair of astrophysical sciences at Princeton University, who is not a co-author of the study. “Planets are much more complex. This ‘diamond-rich super-Earth’ is likely just one example of the rich sets of discoveries that await us as we begin to explore planets around nearby stars.”

Arctic winds caused Britain's washout summers

Cool temperatures and endless rain could become the norm for British summers in future, according to experts from Sheffield University who studied the effects of climate change on wind patterns in the Arctic.

By analysing six years' worth of summer weather data, they found that changes in the direction of Arctic winds were linked to global warming and a rise in unseasonal weather.

Winds which normally blow from west to east have adopted a more wavy pattern, with stronger gusts blowing up from the Bering Strait, across the North Pole, and out to the Atlantic.

This process shifts warm air and sea ice further north, contributing to warmer temperatures and the record loss of summer sea ice recorded this year, scientists said.

It causes high pressure over Greenland, making for warmer and sunnier summers and increased melting of land ice, which leads to the increased likelihood of extreme weather in mid-latitude areas including Britain.

Dr Edward Hanna, one of the authors of the study published in the Geophysical Research Letters journal, said: “It's virtually impossible to predict the weather for any particular summer but we could have cooler, wetter summers on average in the UK because of this effect.

"That's not to say we won't get hot, dry summers but just that these might not be as frequent as you might expect from a straightforward global warming effect. There seems to have been a new regime in summer 2007 that has more or less stayed in place since."

Season 7, Episode 2 - Sunshine And Frosty Swirl

Dexter is headed into new territory this season. I suppose the same could be said for last season as he explored the topic of faith and religion, but with Deb in the loop, it's become even more difficult to predict how this anti-hero will move forward. Can Deb live with this secret now that she understands the full scope of it? Is there any chance for Dexter to turn it around? Once again, someone in his life knows what he is and wants to help him.

It was interesting to note that tonight's "Sunshine and Frosty Swirl" had numerous curbside moments. The episode began with Deb vomiting on the street after learning Dexter was a serial killer. A fitting reaction to such disturbing news. Later, after Dexter opted not to kill Louis, Dexter and Deb had a curbside heart-to-heart. And then, of course, there's the end of the episode, which had murderer Wayne Randall strolling in front of a truck to end his own life. Curbside moments. Maybe that's where Dexter is right now in its seventh season. Pulled over on the side of the road,  taking a breath to analyze itself and its lead character before moving forward.

As mentioned, Deb's reaction to learning that Dexter didn't just kill Travis, but a whole host of other people, was to blow chunks on the side of the road. After her mind put the pieces together, including the Bay Harbor Butcher connection and learning about Harry's code, she went into panic mode and then decided that maybe Harry's approach was wrong. Maybe if he'd tried helping Dexter suppress his dark passenger, he could have been normal. I don't think any of us including Dexter believe that would have worked. Serious therapy and some medication might have been a workable solution, but the babysitting approach seems like an obvious coarse for failure. Sooner or later, Deb's going to have to leave Dexter alone, and then what?

Sure enough, it wasn't long into Deb's new-code approach that Dexter was drugging her steak and taking off to kill someone (we'll get into the Louis situation in a minute). The fact that Dexter backed out of the murder and called Deb suggests he's willing to try her approach. And once again, it forces us to question how in-control he is of his dark passenger. It's also interesting to consider Deb's take on this. Yes, her participation in covering up Travis' murder makes her an accomplice to the crime, which would not only cost her her job but possibly land her in jail, but I have a feeling her determination to get Dexter on the straight-and-narrow has less to do with fear for her own wellbeing as it is fear of the truth and the reality of this whole situation.

Deb's reaction when Dexter told her maybe she should just have him arrested sounded determined to the point of desperate. I don't know that it's just the fear that he'd be hauled off to prison at it is the full branding he'd receive for it. If he goes to jail for his crimes, he becomes a serial killer and that's always what he'll be. Sure, she knows he's a serial killer already, but I get the impression she needs to believe he can not-be a serial killer. As if stopping him and "curing" him could make the whole thing go away. That's just a theory based on how she tried to deal with him tonight and the tone in her voice when she was telling him that the fact that he called her proves he's in control. She sounded almost desperate when she said that, and I think she just needs to believe he can control this.

Watching Deb try to process this situation has been great so far. Sure, we're only two episodes in, but I really feel like the writers are doing a solid job of exploring this situation. It feels like a fair pay-off for those of us who've watched these two characters for six seasons.
